The treatment provided is a course of Trimethoprim tablets to treat the infection that causes the cystitis symptoms. This is the treatment that your doctor would usually prescribe for simple cystitis. Other antibiotics are also used in certain cases, and in some simple cases of cystitis antibiotics are not prescribed and over the counter medicines to lower the acidity of the urine can be used to ease the symptoms.
Like all medicines Trimethoprim can have side effects. Most commonly these include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or an allergic rash. It is possible to be allergic to Trimethoprim and this can cause anaphylaxis and other serious problems so you should not take Trimethoprim if you are allergic to it. You should consult the full list of side effects on the leaflet provided with your treatment prior to taking Trimethoprim.
